— unclassed media

Angel Rooms by kemadrin is a study on ideas of sanctuary, solace and the concept of the sacred and safe in modern society. It attempts to create a soundscape that allows the transformation of the shared spaces we spend our lives in, (whether that be the rented flat or the mall, spaces that whilst they offer temporary shelter still withhold permanent sanctuary) into a place of calm and safety in at least the realm of the mind.

By invoking themes taken from both ritual and lullaby it hopes to invoke a subconscious sense of reassurance and tenderness, that in the form of music can be either cleansing in a home setting or  a form of portable solace. Ultimately it’s for the you to decide if this objective is realised.

Before Ben McDermott was known to us as serocell, he was known to the s900 collective as psignal. Through a decade of irregular releases and dj sets, he established a reputation as somewhat of an iconoclast in style producing weekly sets of eclectic, skillful but far from smooth dj sets mixing the roles of dj and musician, sampler or player.

To celebrate the rebirth of s900.tv we bring you two of his hectic mish mashs for you to preview or download from our soundcloud page.

you can also find serocell at mixcloud with a slightly larger collection of ancient mixes.

HD1082 is what we kindly refer to as our sister site.

Constituting primarially of works considered a little too beat oriented to be featured here it operates as a collective of artists releasing different works under the same umbrella title of Lab Rats Int’l.

It features a wide range of styles stemming from the roots of techno and hip hop but blooming into collage ridden laptop music, with the same genre breaking aesthetic that we pride ourselves as championing.

Please drift along the link into their world.

Charles Matthews brings us a second piece after his well received ‘Back in’ EP. It bears similarity in structure to the first release and is a resolutely electronic work.

Listening to it you feel close to a force, witnessing something without understanding it. One feels the sort of fear and uncertainty one might experience swimming with whales. There seems no ill intent, but you can’t be certain you have been noticed enough to be considered.

These sounds do not pander. You don’t feel you are here to be entertained. There is wisdom, and an aging beauty in this work, which transcends the merely pretty. You get no sense of an artist here. It seems there is something that is happening of its own volition. It doesn’t just move through the musician; it moves through you as if you were not the last recipient.

I would describe this as a very personal piece. It certainly has been for me. It is like an unspeaking stranger you come to feel you understand, and I feel sure that if you spend some time with it, you will thank me for the introduction.

Advanced Capitalism

Advanced Capitalism takes as its subject the contorted truths made possible by the machinations of capitalism in a post-industrial age.

Drawing on the palette of the industrial music of the 90’s, it asks the listener to find humanity in the shadows of a foreground of distortion and aggression – just as we as a society are asked to find community within a society configured to the needs of multinational corporations.

The beauty within this piece comes in the gaps between the crunching beats and overpowering static blasts. In this work kemadrin offers us hope, seen as a glimpse of the human soul as the ghost within the machine.

LA SANGRE DEL MÁRTIR, PURIFICA POR SIMPLE CONTACTO

It’s no secret that we at unclassed media, have an ear for the more spiritual feelings and moods provoked by electronic music, which is why we were proud to be approached by ponytea to release this album.

‘LA SANGRE DEL MÁRTIR, PURIFICA POR SIMPLE CONTACTO’ literally translates to ‘The blood of the martyr purifies by simple contact.’
And relates to the assertion by some that if you touch a martyr’s blood you will be as pure as god. This tradition, (which continues to this day in the form of pilgrimage) refers to the assertion that gods love, or in any sense purity of spirit, can be transferable by no more than touch.

The music centres around many of the traditions of music across the range of spiritual practice, tropes such as reverb, echo and high frequencies combine across the album to place you firmly in a setting of ritual and worship. But it is perhaps more the deep yearning within this piece that really captures the Christian traditions of the fall and original sin. This melancholy spirit builds throughout the work and lies unresolved at the end, as something of an open question to the listener, about what it is within themselves which is unaddressed.

weapon engineering

Weapon Engineering, is an intriguing blend of imagery inspired by the weapons of war, and the remarkable advances brought to us by the massacre of billions, it seems in this world that if you want a reliable piece of equipment then military grade is a byword for purist functionality.

In response to this and other thoughts on the nature of military vs civilian engineering, serocell gives us a study of the menacing overtones of precision that lie at the core of modern warfare, the air conditioned cockpits of smart weapon studded Apaches, point and click killings and carpet bombing launched from floating weapons platforms destined for school children, and hospitals.

The irony that the machines used to make this art were developed in part by the military, but equally 3d game programmers is not lost on serocell. If one were to paraphrase these themes a good image would be that of the white sheen of a scrubbed military floor, soiled only by a single drop of blood.

ars longa vita brevis

Ars Longa, Vita Brevis is the first EP from nascent artist auspice. Each of the four tracks presented here were composed as a simple meditation on a subtle emotion, allowing the listener time and space to slowly gravitate towards the psychological state of the musician.

The landscapes visited here might not be the euphoric planes of conventional dance music nor the lush gardens you might visit in a conventional ambient piece, but rather four varying states of calm, tinged with elements of unease and tension.

You are invited to join the musician in studying their own internal feelings and to observe how your perception is altered by your own environment.
